Maurizio Sarri has moved to try to position himself at the front of the queue to replace Antonio Conte at Chelsea as Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed his departure from Napoli. Chelsea have been deliberating over a number of potential candidates, including Luis Enrique, but Sarri is pushing hard to land the job ahead of the Spaniard. Telegraph Sport can reveal he has employed an English-based intermediary to try to convince the Stamford Bridge club he is the right candidate to succeed head coach Conte, who is expected to be sacked. And there are other moves behind the scenes aimed at making a Chelsea move for Sarri as smooth as possible. Carlo Ancelotti has agreed to take over at Napoli, whose president De Laurentiis effectively announced Sarri's departure with a message posted on Twitter that read: "I'd like to thank Maurizio Sarri for his valuable contribution to the Napoli cause. He brought joy and prestige to Naples and Napoli fans all over the world with an entertaining brand of football that drew praise from all quarters. Well done, Maurizio." Sources in Italy claim that talks have taken place aimed at convincing Napoli to allow Sarri, whose contract contained a £7m release clause, join Chelsea for free if they let David Luiz to move in the opposite direction. Luiz fell out of favour under Conte and also suffered recurring knee injury problems this season. He has one year remaining on his contract and, aged 31, is yet to hold talks over an extension. Finding a buyer for Luiz may well be attractive to Chelsea, who paid £34m to re-sign the Brazilian from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016. As revealed by Telegraph Sport, he will consider taking a break from management if he is sacked and that could be expensive for Chelsea, who face a potential compensation bill of £9m. Conte has seen the Italian national post go to Mancini and PSG appointed Thomas Tuchel, which means he could wait for another big European job to become available before jumping back into management. Other than Sarri and Enrique, Chelsea had been interested in Mauricio Pochettino but the Argentine is expected to sign a new Tottenham Hotspur contract after holding positive talks with chairman Daniel Levy.

Antonio Conte will consider taking a break if he is sacked as Chelsea head coach, which would be a blow to the club’s hopes of avoiding an expensive compensation package. Conte has been left in the dark over his future since leading Chelsea to FA Cup success last Saturday, with a game of brinkmanship threatening to be played out. The Italian has made it clear he will not walk away from the final year of his contract, meaning Chelsea must sack him and risk paying a compensation bill of up to £9million to replace him. One simple solution to the impasse would be for Conte to walk straight into another job, but the potential options for him are running out. Roberto Mancini has taken over the Italian national team, Thomas Tuchel was appointed by Paris Saint-Germain and Max Allegri looks set to stay at Juventus. Inter Milan are preparing to keep Luciano Spalletti after qualifying for the Champions League and Carlo Ancelotti is being touted as a possible replacement for Maurizio Sarri if the 59-year-old leaves Napoli. FA Cup final reaction and analysis | How Chelsea held their nerve against United Conte is believed to be willing to wait for one of Europe’s top jobs if he is forced to leave Stamford Bridge, which could be costly for Chelsea. The Blues would have to continue to pay Conte for the remaining 12 months of his contract while he is out of work, meaning a year-long sabbatical would cost them the full £9m. There is also the issue of Conte’s staff, who would be due pay offs even if the Italian quit but it is not certain that they would all follow the former Juventus manager out of Chelsea. Goalkeeping coach Gianluca Spinelli is thought to be prepared to stay at Chelsea, particularly if Conte leaves without a job to walk back into. Spinelli, who was part of Conte’s staff with the Italian national team, has worked well with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and is highly rated by the Belgian and within Stamford Bridge. Other than saving them money, Spinelli could solve a possible problem for Chelsea if he stayed on, as former goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon, who is still employed by the club, does not get on with Courtois. Courtois is yet to sign an extension to his contract that only has 12 months to run and the prospect of working with Lollichon again could be enough to convince him to leave Chelsea. Chelsea may look to offload Alvaro Morata this summer Credit: Getty images Despite uncertainty over Conte and his staff, Chelsea are making transfer plans for the summer and could be forced to make a big decision over record signing Alvaro Morata. Juventus have already shown an interest in taking Morata back and AC Milan are the latest club to investigate whether or not they could afford to sign the Spaniard. It is not believed AC could match Chelsea’s £57m valuation of Morata, but the Italians could look to take him on loan with a view to a permanent move. Chelsea are not desperate to sell Morata, who they believe will be better next season, but they are willing to let him go if he asks to leave or if they can finance a move for a replacement by cashing in. Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, who is also of interest to Tottenham Hotspur, are two forwards on Chelsea’s radar.

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, who is also of interest to Tottenham Hotspur, are two forwards on Chelsea’s radar.
Juventus have already shown an interest in taking Morata back and AC Milan are the latest club to investigate whether or not they could afford to sign the Spaniard. Nemanja Matic has warned Manchester United need quality signings this summer if they are to challenge for the Premier League and Champions League as the midfielder admitted the club’s trophyless campaign has cranked up the pressure for next season. Mourinho ideally wants to bring in five new players this summer but knows the truncated transfer window, which is compounded by the month long World Cup finals in Russia, will reduce the time to complete deals and make acquiring such numbers increasingly difficult. They include two full backs, a centre-half, a midfielder and a winger. The United manager will also be under pressure to offload peripheral players, such as Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind, to accommodate space on the wage bill and avoid a bloated squad. If Marouane Fellaini fails to agree a new contract, Mourinho would be left needing two midfielders following the retirement of Michael Carrick, a scenario which could impact on plans to strengthen elsewhere. Defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley ensured United finished without a trophy and the prospect of Liverpool winning the Champions League against Real Madrid on Saturday would be another kick in the teeth to Mourinho after a campaign in which he has seen the club’s other biggest rival, Manchester City, run away with the title. Pep Guardiola’s side amassed a century of points and finished 19 ahead of United, in second. “I think we need some players with some experience to bring some more qualities to our team,” Matic said. “After that, we can fight for the title and the Champions League also.” FA Cup final player ratings Asked if the Chelsea defeat had increased the pressure for next season, the United midfielder added: “Of course, this is football. When you don’t win one year, the next year is always more pressure. When you play for Manchester United, this is a normal thing and we have to accept that and deal with that.” United are working on a deal for Fred, Shakhtar Donetsk’s Brazil midfielder, whom City tried to sign in January. City are thought to have now turned their sights to Jorginho, the Napoli and Italy midfielder, which could assist United’s pursuit of Fred although Shakhtar want £52.5 million. United have also been linked with left-backs Alex Sandro, of Juventus, and Tottenham’s Danny Rose, as well as Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld, Chelsea winger Willian and Real Madrid centre-half Raphael Varane. Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri has been offered to all the Premier League’s top six. However, Mourinho’s chequered record in the transfer market since taking over at Old Trafford does not inspire confidence and the manager must address a series of issues within his existing squad. Victor Lindelof has endured an unconvincing debut season since his £30.7 million move from Benfica last summer and was omitted from the FA Cup final squad altogether. United in turmoil puff Another centre-half, Eric Bailly, a £30.4 million recruit from Villarreal in 2016, has been strangely frozen out since returning from a long injury lay-off and has made just five starts since February, despite being widely regarded as the best defender at the club. Team-mates have been left bemused by Bailly’s persistent omissions and Mourinho’s claims that he was giving more playing time to those defenders who had a chance of going to the World Cup failed to convince some. Left back Luke Shaw has never won Mourinho’s trust and his future is shrouded in uncertainty with his career at a crossroads. Paul Pogba’s form has plummeted since the turn of the year and it cannot be discounted that Mourinho would consider cashing in on the France midfielder if Paris St-Germain made a huge offer this summer. Anthony Martial’s relationship with Mourinho is also strained and Juventus head a queue of clubs, including Spurs, who are interested in signing the France forward. Martial’s omission from the France squad for the World Cup may force him to consider his options with the player – a substitute in the Cup final – not getting regular starts. “I’d like to think he’d stay,” Paul Scholes, the former United midfielder, said. “Whether his manager quite fancies him I’m not too sure about at the minute. He’s not shown too much confidence in him. Martial’s a really good talent. I think he needs a bit of love, he needs an arm around him. Every time he comes on he impresses me. I just hope he’s not one of those that leaves and then we see the best of them.” Other changes are also expected behind the scenes with Mourinho due to hire Italian fitness coach Stefano Rapetti from Sampdoria in the wake of Rui Faria’s departure as assistant manager. Rapetti worked with Mourinho at Inter Milan. Kieran McKenna, United’s Under-18 coach, could also be promoted to the first team set up.
Nemanja Matic says Manchester United must buy quality this summer as club targets five new signings
Antonio Conte has insisted Chelsea are in far better shape than when he took over from Jose Mourinho – even if the club miss out on qualifying for the Champions League. Chelsea had finished 10th during Mourinho’s final season, when he was sacked in December 2015, before Conte was appointed head coach the next summer. Having guided Chelsea to the Premier League title during his first season, Conte now requires a major helping hand for his team to snatch a top-four place ahead of Liverpool. Chelsea have to win at Newcastle United and hope Brighton beat Liverpool at Anfield. But with an FA Cup final still to look forward to against Mourinho’s Manchester United, Conte insists his second – and in all likelihood final – season at Chelsea has not been a write off. Conte, who last summer stated he did not want a “Mourinho season”, said: “Don’t forget two years ago, Chelsea ended the season 10th and not in the FA Cup final, not in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and they were eliminated in the last 16 against PSG in the Champions League. It can happen. Telegraph Sport's Premier League goals of the season “You must know that there is this possibility, because you play in a strong league. For this reason, you have to know this and prepare in the right way. There are six top teams at the start of the season ready to fight for a place in the Champions League. It can happen. In the past, it happened the same.” Asked if Chelsea were now in a better place than when he arrived, Conte added: “For sure, we worked two years and worked very hard to try to build something, to create a base. “I think you remember. Last season, after a 10th place, we won the Premier League. It was difficult. We worked very hard, but we won. After a 10th-place finish. Now, probably, you can finish fifth and start with a bit of an advantage compared to when you finish 10th. “We are struggling to take a place in the Champions League. But, I repeat, you play in a league that is very tough; where there are six top teams who fight to take the four Champions League places. It can happen. Last season, if I remember, United finished sixth and Arsenal fifth. It means you must pay great attention for the present and the future. It won’t be easy. It’s not automatic that you finish every season in the top four.” Conte is expected to leave Chelsea after the FA Cup, but, as has been the case for weeks, the Italian refused to speak about his future. He did, however, hint that he was not part of the club’s long-term planning by admitting he did not know Chelsea’s summer schedule and revealed he would head straight to Italy for Andrea Pirlo’s testimonial after the Cup final. “For sure, probably, I will go to Milan for the game for Pirlo on the 21st [of May],” said Conte. “Then we don’t know, at the end of the season, if we have friendly games. I don’t know anything about our end of season. For sure, in the next week, the situation will be more clear for the end of the season. “Now, I think we must be focused to finish the season. Then it will be the right moment for the person to understand the situation and take the best solution, find the solution in the best possible way.” The players and managers signing off this weekend... and those who could be Chelsea have been linked with a string of managers, including Napoli’s Maurizio Sarri, Luis Enrique and Max Allegri, but Conte does not hold a grudge against anybody eying up his job. “This is normal,” he said. “This is our job. Our life. As you know very well, our job is very difficult for this reason because you stay, not every day – actually, this season every day – you stay in balance. “It’s normal to have a lot of speculation around you. But this is normal. This is my job. We have to live with this pressure, with this type of situation. I have great respect for everyone.”
Antonio Conte aims barb at former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho by insisting fifth place is better than 10th
